Light is critical for our wellbeing. It enables
performance of visual tasks, affects mood and perception, enables critical
chemical reactions in the body, and controlls the body’s circadian rhythm.
Circadian rhythm is the natural cycle which
reminds the human body that it is time to get up, sleep, eat or heal. It is
controlled by an area of the brain that responds to light, which is why we are
most alert while the sun is shining and ready to sleep when it's dark outside.
Modern life has generated many ways to disrupt
this rhythm. Nowadays, most of us spend up to 90% of our time indoors and experience
significant lower amount of daylight. We live, work, and play under uniform and
consistent artificial light, which proves to be insufficient many times.
Disruption of circadian rhythm is linked to insomnia,
depression, Seasonal affective disorder, poor mental performance, weight gain,
breast cancer and other.
RISE OF HUMAN CENTRIC LIGHTING
Ideal artificial lighting should be tailored to this rhythm and naturally adapt to constantly changing daylight by adjusting temperature and light intensity to meet the needs of our body.
Comprehensive knowledge about the biological effects of light and recent innovations that happened in lighting technology made such lighting possible. It's called Human Centric Lighting (HCL).
HCL “mimics” daylight during the day and creates the best possible conditions for people staying indoors. By providing visual, biological and emotional benefits, Human Centric Lighting solutions can support the human circadian rhythm, enhance concentration, prevent sleeping disorders and improve our overall well-being.
LUMENIA is working on improving this technology and on its meaningful application with our SKY LUM product line for Human Centric Lighting.
